Keepit Regatta 2010… It's Over!

The 2010 edition of the Lake Keepit Regatta is over!

In every respect, the Regatta lived up to expectations… except where it exceeded them.

Dozens of pilots and sailplanes took part, thousands of kilometres were flown, scores of tasks were set, sometimes on the same day, truckloads of food was eaten… and everyone had fun.

Finishing in style

The idea behind the regatta was to have a not-too-serious competition where pilots who wanted to learn cross country soaring techniques, AAT tasks and have an introduction to competition flying were matched with a more experienced coach or mentor who would show them around the course.

Needless to say that many of the pilots in both leader and follower categories behaved like naughty school kids with the result that the radio chat was almost as much fun as the flying. All days were flown, though on two the weather looked so unpromising that tasks were cancelled, only to have a number of pilots fly the course with apparent ease.

Jolly Blue

The Regatta was fully subscribed with all club accommodation and club gliders being used with several visitors from other clubs and even from interstate making up the numbers.

In the end there were three main night time events. The Mexican night, the Croquet night at the Dircks house and the big dinner at the close of the Regatta. The picture here shows the Mexican night, and the closing night was even bigger. Read the full story in the next issue of Keep Soaring… and be sure to leave a space in the last week of February 2011 for the next edition of the LKSC Regatta.

Keepit Safari 2009

We came, we flew, it rained!

Actually, that's not quite true. Rain there was, but in incredibly small amounts and at Lightning Ridge where small is really small. But it would not be a Keepit Safari without both sorts of weather!

On safari

Normally, both sorts of weather occurred on the same day with a mix of strong headwinds and very strong headwinds. And as usual, this character building flying only reinforced the general bonhomie. There is a direct relationship between time spent in the cockpit and the amount of beer required to recover. On several days, the rate of progress was less than the stall speed of any of the gliders, but that didn't stop everyone having fun.

Both sorts of weather

The full report on the Keepit Safari 2009 can be read in the December-January issue of Keep Soaring which will be somewhere on this web site when the editor has recovered from the safari enough to get down to some work.

Welcome to the

Lake Keepit Soaring Club Website

This site is a resource for LKSC members and visitors wanting to find out what's on, what's been happening, or to know more about the club, or to visit the club for flying or training.

Lake Keepit Soaring Club is is one of Australia's best known cross country soaring sites. It's a club… meaning that costs are kept to a minimum, and it's a 7 day a week operation, running all year round…  so it is an outstanding place to fly.

For the latest daily news, check Jenny's Blog from the menu above. Jenny Ganderton is the weekday manager at the Lake Keepit Soaring Club and a fanatical pilot who won't give up on a task until they pull the wings off the glider and put it into the trailer ready for the long drive home.

4 Day Cross Country Weekends Dates

 Cross Country Weekends.

4 day weekends are held once a month to encourage post solo training and cross country training, or just cross country flying in company. These weekends have proved a great success with a lot of interest from all levels of pilots from LKCS and other clubs.

The weekends include morning briefings with weather including temp flights, task setting, lectures and any other help people may require. Tasks will be AAT or RUN Tasks so you can make it as long or as short as you feel comfortable with.

Another great cross country day at LKSC

Pilots are welcome to fly their own glider, to fly a club glider, or to fly in a two seater with an instructor. For more details, see the 4 day weekends page
